Subject Combinations
Overview
We offer a variety of subject combinations that cater to students’ interests, strengths and aspirations for further studies.
Our subject combinations follow MOE’s curricular requirements:
-
Students may select subjects at three different levels of study: Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2) and Higher 3 (H3). A student may not offer the same subject at both H1 and H2.
-
All students must take four content-based subjects, of which at least three must be H2 subjects. The fourth subject may be taken at H1 or H2.
-
One of the H1 or H2 content-based subjects must be a contrasting subject.
-
Students in the Arts course must take a subject from the Science and Mathematics group, while students in the Science course must take a subject from the Humanities and the Arts group.
-
The subject ‘Knowledge & Inquiry’ can serve as a contrasting subject for students from both courses.
-
-
All students must take H1 General Paper and Project Work (PW).
-
All students must take H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL).
-
Students who have obtained a D7 or better grade for O-Level Higher MTL are exempted from the H1 MTL requirement.
-
Students may take H2 Mother Tongue Language and Literature in lieu of H1 MTL.
-
Details on H3 offerings will be made known to students in JC1 Semester 2.
Merit-Based Allocation
A merit-based allocation approach is used for some subjects, for example when the demand for the subject exceeds the number of places available.
The table below gives the indicative cut-off for merit-based allocated subjects from last year’s exercise.

Subject Combinations (for 2026 JC1 intake)
Students must offer a subject combination that corresponds to their course of study (Arts or Science).
Students may refer to the subject combinations offered by the college and select the one that best caters to their interests, strengths and aspirations for further studies.
A subject combination will be opened if there are at least ten students who have registered for that combination.
