Mother Tongue
The Mother Tongue curriculum in NJC is guided by the MOE 'A' Level syllabus. The following subjects are offered:
-
Chinese Language 'B' (CLB)
-
H1 Mother Tongue Language (H1MTL) (Chinese, Malay, Tamil)
-
H2 Malay Language and Literature (H2MLL)
-
H2 Tamil Language and Literature (H2TLL)
NJC is also one of two Junior Colleges that offer the Malay Language Elective Programme (MLEP) and Tamil Language Elective Programme (TLEP).
CLB and H1MTL
The CLB and H1MTL are an extension of their respective 'O' Level CLB and G3 MTL curricula. Students develop the five core skills - speaking, writing, listening, reading and thinking skills - through seminars and tutorials. Teachers actively engage students through class discussions, film appreciation, game-based learning, and real-life examples, enabling students to apply the skills learned to their daily lives.
For local university admissions, students are required to attain at least a Pass grade in CLB OR an S grade in H1MTL. Students need not take H1MTL if they have obtained a D7 or better in Higher MTL (HTML) at the 'O' Level, as they would have fulfilled the MTL requirement. Students who were offered CLB in their secondary schools will continue to offer the approved CLB in JC.
H2 MLL and TLL
The H2 Mother Tongue Language and Literature curricula are designed for students with a strong foundation in the respective languages and a passion for language and literary studies. Students go through a study of drama, poetry, prose, and novels, enabling them to develop a deeper appreciation of literature. Lessons are conducted in a seminar format, with teachers placing strong emphasis on cultivating students’ critical and creative thinking skills.
