Literature in English
Studying Literature is studying people, perspectives, cultures, and civilisations. Through the stories we encounter, we learn about the world — the values we hold dear, the issues seen and unseen, and the conversations we need, but may not always have. As students cultivate their sensitivity to language, they begin to appreciate not only the tales told, but also the ways words come together to create meaning and beauty. In doing so, Literature develops both the heart and the mind.
At National Junior College, we aspire to nurture not just a passion for reading, but also a curiosity about lives lived and unlived, a mind open to new possibilities, and a heart that savours every experience. Lessons are centred on discussion, allowing students to apply academic skills while engaging thoughtfully with ideas relevant to their lives. Students also learn beyond the classroom through enrichment opportunities such as engagement with local writers and annual theatre trips.
H1 Literature in English
H1 Literature offers students a strong foundation in literary study through close reading, discussion, and thoughtful writing. In Paper 1: Reading Literature, students explore engaging texts and develop confidence in interpreting language and expressing personal and critical responses.
H2 Literature in English
H2 Literature deepens students’ engagement with a wider range of texts, ideas, and literary methods. Through Paper 1: Reading Literature and Paper 2: Reading Literature featuring the English Romantic Period (1785–1832) students sharpen their analytical skills, explore social and historical contexts, and develop more sophisticated arguments.
H3 Literature in English
H3 Literature is designed for students with a strong passion for the subject who wish to pursue it at a more advanced level. Students engage in rigorous literary inquiry and independent thinking while refining their academic writing and interpretive skills. H3 is only offered to qualifying students after the first year of study.
